Integrating Culture and Values into
Health Professions Education
Integrating culture and values into the training of health professionals has been given less attention over the last decade due to greater focus on developing professional and clinical related competencies based on international best practices.
The mission of a healthcare profession is rooted in a set of core values. Misconceptions of cultural disparities, community and individual values can form barriers in the practice. With whom does the responsibility of integrating culture and values in education rest? Can relevant stakeholders collaborate to ensure that health professionals are culturally sensitive and values driven when serving the community?
There are needs to be a balance between the expectations of patients and contextual settings of communities with the cultural awareness and values of health professionals who are serving them. This balance is more crucial now more than ever, with the growing mobility of health professionals, students and patients. IMEC 2016 brings home this message to health care professionals, educators and employers.
